The New Aliph Jawbone: Bluetooth Headset

Jawbone1 gold_front_large

The Original Jawbone 1                                            The New Jawbone

Aliph’s first generation Jawbone Bluetooth headset generated tons of interest when it came out three years ago.  It was so unique looking that people took notice.  It featured a futuristic, stealth-like design with a curve that followed one’s cheekbone.  It was attractive in a borg-like way.  You would expect those wearing them to have a battery compartment on their backs.

It also featured noise canceling technology approved by DARPA, which resulted in excellent audio quality.

The buttons were hidden within the design and some found them hard to press.  It had no volume rocker so one had to cycle through the five volume settings.

Aliph just announced the New Jawbone, which is slimmer, lighter, and more fashionable.  In fact, the designer of the Jawbone, Yves Behar, said,

“The Jawbone strategy we set-out to follow three years ago has proven that products that live on our face need to be designed differently than typical technology wares; we regard them as personal accessories or even jewelry, and, as such, believe they need to be a complete departure from the gadgetry of the mobile and headset industry.”

The new Jawbone is 50% smaller, features best in class noise elimination technology, “invisible buttons”, Touch-surface technology and a clutter free look, according to Jawbone.

So how did it fare in the real world?

Workers Paying for their own Laptops, Gadgets

hughes-81059227-1213955775_thumb In an interesting article by Gina Hughes, The Techie Diva, she states that a “recent study by In-Stat discovered that nearly 40% of the professionals surveyed admitted to buying their own work laptop, and it’s likely that countless others have used their personal PDAs, GPS, cameras and even cell phones for work-related projects because most companies aren’t willing to buy them one.”

Recently my boss bought me a laptop for travel.  However, I have found it bulky compared to my personal gadget, an HTC Advantage.  Would he have bought me an Advantage had I asked?  Probably not.  Yet I find it a very sufficient gadget for traveling.  It stores all my contact information, has GPS, WiFi, all my product information, and is very portable.  After using the Advantage I just can’t lug around a laptop.

Gina says, “Apparently, some employers feel electronics are too expensive and aren’t convinced that gadgets boost productivity. However, one In-Stat tech analyst says these companies are being ‘penny wise but pound foolish’ because electronics do add value and cost less than an employee’s time.”

My boss has been very generous, so I have no complaints.  But I have spent lots of money on my own to increase my work productivity.  It would be nice to be reimbursed for my digital camera, hundreds of dollars’ worth of Advantage software and the Advantage itself.  Perhaps my increased productivity will yet pay off.  I hope to see a raise and a bonus for my improved efforts.  On the other hand, the economy is harsh, so I may be out of luck.  But there’s always next year.

2nd Rush Countdown

rush_snakesTour

I just saw Rush a couple weeks ago at the United Center in Chicago.  It was probably the best show I’ve ever seen.  Even in their 50’s they have more energy than most bands half their age.  The show was three hours plus a 1/2 hour intermission.  They played tons of great stuff.  Here’s their set list:

Limelight
Digital Man
Ghost Of A Chance
Mission
Freewill
The Main Monkey Business
The Larger Bowl (video intro)
Red Barchetta
The Trees
Between The Wheels
Dreamline

INTERMISSION

Far Cry (video intro)
Workin’ Them Angels
Armor and Sword
Spindrift
The Way The Wind Blows
Subdivisions
Natural Science
Witch Hunt
Malignant Narcissism (drum solo)
Hope
The Spirit Of Radio
2112 (overture/the temples of syrinx)
Tom Sawyer (south park intro)

ENCORE

One Little Victory
A Passage To Bangkok
YYZ

They played 7 songs from their new Snakes and Arrows album, which is a few too many for my taste, though I absolutely love the new album.  Our seats were on the floor, about 30 rows back, dead center.  Above each of the three was a huge screen that showed videos and each musician.  The show included a bit of humor, like the South Park intro for Tom Sawyer.  The band members looked like they were having a great time on stage, and the audience was very involved.

The show was so good that I will see them again in 9 days at Milwaukee Fest.  Sweet.
